Even as we talk of blue economies, it is vital to protect the lives of our people who are being poisoned by polluted waters of the Athi River. Most of the pollution is from factories that dump chemicals into the river.
To protect our families from developing some cancers and other diseases, action HAS to be taken. The law is there and the enforcers are salaried. It is time for action.
I give companies in Machakos County, especially in Mavoko area, up to end of this month to ensure they have complied fully with environmental regulations and are not dumping into the river. From next week, we will shut them down.
I am aware that some companies bribe inspection and environmental officers and even police officers, so that they can place profit over the lives of our children. There will be no mercy for such greedy people.
Because 90 percent of the pollution of Athi River is from Nairobi county and Kiambu county companies, I will engage my fellow Governors Sonko and Waititu so as to enforce the law.
As a Government, we will also move to court to obtain closure orders of polluters in Nairobi and Kiambu whose chemicals are killing my people of Machakos & impacting on Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta and Kilifi counties.
Yes, we need a clean environment and clear blue waters that can be used for a blue economy. However, this will only be possible, if we enforce both the law and common sense.

GOVERNOR, MACHAKOS COUNTY
