Governor's Office|

I have today joined Prof. Margaret Kobia, Cabinet Secretary Public Service and Gender and Director General, National Youth Service, Ms. Matilda Sakwa for the launch of the Nationwide Boda boda riders training program. The launch was at the Machakos People’s Park.

The training, which will be offered by the NTSA and the NYS, is targeting over 1.5 million riders across Kenya.

I am proud that Machakos County continues to be the preferred county to launch national projects. From the medical equipment programme, the last mile programme, huduma namba registration, to this very important national programme.

As a government, we will ensure the success of this project in Machakos County and I encourage all boda boda riders in Machakos to enroll for the programme. Riders with licences will pay Sh750 for a five-day programme while those without licences will pay Sh4,500 for a 21-day programme.

To support our youth for this programme, my government will pay full costs for all riders with licences and my Cabinet will meet and soon deliberate on the amount my government will supplement for riders without licences.

About 90% of all boda boda accidents are caused by human error, with over 1,500 boda boda related deaths in just 2020. This Sh320 billion enterprise that directly employs over 1.7 million youth is an essential subsector that cannot be ignored, hence the need for training, to bring discipline, order, increase competence, build character, entrepreneurial skills and inculcate a savings culture among the boda boda riders.

On the political front, I urge all politicians to practise clean politics. Leaders must offer direction to our people. The endless politicking without development is a sign of retrogressive politics.

Let us interrogate presidential candidates and all politicians seeking higher offices on their performance records and simply reject empty rhetoric.

We want leadership that is focused on improving the quality of the lives of Kenyans. We must demand better from our leaders and hold them accountable.

Kenya ni sisi.

Dr. Alfred N. MUTUA, EGH
Governor of Machakos,
Maendeleo Chap Chap Party Leader & 2022 Presidential Candidate.
